This new certification is great news for food manufacturers who want to certify their food with this important quality attribute: food free from Glyphosate residues! Consumers will benefit as well because organic and nonGMO Verified Project labels do not necessarily mean foods are Glyphosate or Roundup-free. Glyphosate is the most used and abused herbicide in history! Roundup is a pesticide toxin sprayed on GMO crops as part of the pesticide-dependent GMO crop system, but many people are unaware it is often used as a pre-harvest crop ripener on nonGMO crops. In this application, it essentially kills the plant to facilitate harvesting of many conventional crops like beans, peas, chick peas, and other plants. The Glyphosate toxin remains on the food part of the plant and accumulates on foods, lacking Federal government review or limits on residue accumulation from multiple sprays. So many people have no idea they are regularly ingesting a pesticide toxin (which has also been patented by Monsanto as an antibiotic) at their dining tables. Over time, the sublethal chemical doses of Glyphosate can lead to a myriad of health problems.
What is contaminating our foods, polluting our water supplies, and destroying soils health? GLYPHOSATE, best known for being the active ingredient in RoundUp, along with other so-called “inert” ingredients. Glyphosate was originally patented as a boiler descaler by Stauffer Chemical. Later after Monsanto obtained this broad spectrum biocidal chemical, it was patented as an herbicide to be paired with its GMO RoundUp Ready crops, and subsequently patented as an antibiotic by the corporation.
A further use was later recommended as a crop ripening/drying agent for food crops such as wheat, barley, lentils, peas and other nonGMO grains and legumes, leading to chemical residue to contaminate much of our food supply.. In short, Glyphosate is virtually ubiquitous in western developed agriculture, except for organic farming. All of this has been happening under the guise of government deception, despite numerous peer-reviewed studies and evidence from around the world showing cancer, liver and kidney toxicity, and other health and ecosystem harms. The US government has been covering this up with abundant industry and special interest sponsored science. Unlike many major industrialized countries around the world, the US has taken numerous evasive actions to prevent useful consumer GMO labeling, inclusive of other crops containing Glyphosate, which has been declared a probable carcinogen by WHO. For instance, if an organic farmer’s crops are found to be contaminated by GMOs, that farmer can still send his crops to market under the certified organic label, as long as the farmer has shown that he/she has not purposely grown GMOs. Monsanto-friendly USDA wrote this loophole so that the source polluters (GMO farmers and GMO seed corporations) would have no liability for their pollution. USDA law is not just unfair to organic famers, it’s a serious threat to their livelihoods as unpreventable and unwanted GMO contamination can bankrupt them! It’s prudent to know your surrounding farmers to beware of Bt pollen contamination and/or whats been farmed on or adjacent the land in prior years. In short USDA GMO agricultural policy has been crafted to potentially crush small family farmers who work hard to preserve the quality and purity of their nutritious produce; they have no definitive organic protection under US law! In this regard the organic label is slanted to be anti-consumer as consumers may not be getting what they think they are buying when buying the organic label! Also a note for millennials this Presidential election: Dr. Jill Stein appears to be the best candidate for GMO labeling as noted by her position paper. Hillary Clinton has flip-flopped when challenged by Bernie, but her history shows strong ProGMO interests. Donald Trump says he is for labeling but who knows exactly what that means. State laws resulted from citizen action; this national bill ignored citizens’ interests and rights in favor of corporate interests. If you don’t act now, and the President signs the bill it will become a very bad anti- consumer law. We Americans will be denied the right to know what is in our food. Very easy to leave a comment on the White House lines. This flawed bill, if not vetoed, will become law for a 2 year deferral on voluntary QR code labeling only – nothing in plain English on package as FDA customarily requires. It’s such a hastily drafted bill with conflicts and errors, of which the primary intent was to knock out Vermont’s mandatory food labeling law which went into effect July 1st, 2016.
